Great Plumbers, Great Reviews
A garbage disposal is an appliance that gets treated like it can handle anything. What ends up there on a daily basis has a major impact on how long the unit lasts and how well your drain line holds up. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we see garbage disposal replacement jobs that could have been avoided with a little knowledge upfront. Keep reading to find out what's doing damage every time it goes down the drain.
Grease goes down as a liquid and solidifies inside your pipes. It coats the inside of the drain line, narrows the passage, and traps other debris on its way through. Enough buildup causes a blockage that no amount of hot water will fix.
Bacon drippings, butter, meat fat, and frying oil all behave the same way. Pour them into a heat-safe container, let them cool, and throw them in the trash. Professional plumbers who respond to a grease clog will tell you the same thing every time.
The damage compounds when grease mixes with soap residue and food. The combination hardens into a thick coating that shrinks the interior diameter of your drain line and eventually stops water flow.
I called at midnight on a Friday and the dispatcher confirmed an appointment window for 8-11AM that same morning. Shaun was great - he arrived early in the time window and got to the job quickly. There was an issue with a specialized part that broke during installation, and he followed through with great communication until the job was totally completed. I’m not knowledgeable about plumbing, but as far as I can tell, the quality of the work looks good. The cost was not cheap, but I am pleased with the service and the quality of work. Make sure to…
At first the online scheduler didn't work, but it was very easy to call and set up an appointment. I liked receiving a text with the plumber's photo saying he was on his way. Jason arrived as scheduled. He provided all estimates in writing up front and was very courteous and professional as he explained the plumbing problems he found. I decided to replace my aging water heater, and he returned with my new water heater and finished installing it that afternoon, even when I needed to be away for a few hours. The hot water temperature is now perfect,…
Jason and Josh did an excellent job fixing our blocked pipes. They were so quick, kind, and efficient. They did amazing, quality work and they were so nice and professional. It was quite a big project, and They took the time to explain what they would be doing every step of the way We are so happy to have working plumbing in our home again and would highly recommend them to anyone!
Ryan was very professional and did a great job of unclogging the pipes. He was the second plumber of the day. The first guy didn't unclog the drain and then proceeded to say it would take $8,000 to fix the clog. Insane. I called Mr. Rooter and had the fortunate opportunity to meet Ryan, who, instead of trying to make a big sale, took his time and unclogged the line in less than 10 minutes. He showed me what was going on and even showed me what was going to be needed in the future. This is why I'll always…
John dubose went above and beyond to fix my issue . He placed a clean out valve in the location of the pipe to make it easier to access whenever my pipes get backed up again. He explained everything before proceeding so I understood what he would be doing to fix my backed up pipes and I can tell he defiantly was a Profesional and have been doing this for a long time . He was very patient with me and answered all of my questions . He showed kindness which i appreciated since i was in so much stress…
I am very satisfied with Jason Johnson and the experience with Mr. Rooter in general! I called in the evening and was placed on the emergency wait line for the next day. Jason came shortly before noon and I immediately had a good feeling about him. I showed him the pipe that leaked in the front yard and he patiently listened to me and took an overview. What I really liked was that he showed his knowledge about the whole situation. He didn't just address the leaking pipe but also pointed out the whole system in general and where else…
Jim Mahoney and his team of plumbers consisting of Jason Johnson, Andrew Fitch, and Cameron Funk were exceptional in the service they provided. I had major damage to my home because of plumbing issues from living in an older home. Jim sent his team out and they not only were thorough in fixing my plumbing issues, they educated me about the contributions I was causing that would eventually lead to more unnecessary problems. I would highly recommend any of the plumbers (Jason, Andrew, and Cameron) to anyone that might have plumbing issues in the Atalanta area. They are knowledgeable, courteous,…
I was very pleased with the service from Mr. Rooter. My tech, Jason, was friendly, timely, upfront about pricing, discussed options, and executed the job promptly. I had a water line replaced and the job was performed quickly and professionally with minimal disruption to my landscaping (only grass near the meter). I would highly recommend Mr. Rooter and specifically, Jason J. and his apprentice Cameron F. The boring crew was friendly and timely as well.
Mr Rooter sent out a Tech the very next morning. Arrived on time and replaced the pipe. Was very professional and courteous. A few days later there appeared to be a wet spot on outside brick on house. I called Mr Rooter and they sent an inspector out right away. He was very thorough. NO LEAKS, just water trapped in between the walls trying to dry-out. The inspector was also very professional and courteous. I was very pleased from the moment the young lady answered my call to the lady who sent the inspector out. Their professionalism from start to…
Highly recommend and Great people to work with!! Hi ….just a quick review of “Mr Rooter” who came to my home fixing and redoing a very clogged “sewer drain line”. The folks from Mr Rooter , Bryan and John and Taylor and Rod who spent a couple of days dealing with this issue did an amazing and excellent job of explaining and keeping us informed as to the issues and procedures of this problem. They worked their rear ends off and spent countless hours getting everything done. I knew they really cared and took the time needed to make sure…
Coffee grounds look harmless because they're small and seem to rinse away easily. What they actually do is clump together in the drain line and form a dense, wet mass that water can't push through. The disposal handles them fine, but the pipe doesn't.
Compost your grounds or throw them in the trash. If you've been rinsing them down for a while, it's worth running a strong flush of water to clear out whatever has settled in the bends of your drain.
Daily coffee drinkers are the most likely to see this problem develop without realizing the grounds are the cause. The clog builds slowly, the drain gets sluggish, and by the time it's obvious something is wrong, there's a massive blockage sitting in the pipe.
Celery stalks, artichoke leaves, asparagus, and similar vegetables have long, stringy fibers that don't cut cleanly. The disposal's blades spin them into a tangled mess that wraps around the motor shaft and jams the unit. A jammed motor that runs hot long enough burns out.
Toss fibrous vegetable scraps in the trash or add them to a compost bin. The time you save isn't worth the repair call. Disposal blades are designed for soft food waste, not fibrous plant material with the tensile strength of twine.
Onion skins fall into this category, too. The thin papery layers slip past the blades and catch on the drain line instead of grinding down. They're easy to overlook but contribute to the same kind of buildup.
Pasta and rice expand when they absorb water. If you send them down the disposal, they keep expanding inside the drain. Starchy food waste also forms a sticky paste that adheres to pipe walls and grabs onto anything else passing through.
A small amount isn't a crisis, but regular disposal of pasta, rice, oatmeal, or bread creates buildup. These foods are better off in the trash. If your drain is already moving slowly, starchy waste will make it worse faster than almost anything else.
The starch issue gets worse in older plumbing with rough interior pipe surfaces. Paste accumulates faster in those conditions, and a slow drain can turn into a full blockage without much warning.
Eggshells generate a lot of debate. The shells themselves aren't the main problem, but the thin membrane lining the inside is. The membrane wraps around the disposal's moving parts and sticks. Combine that with the fine, gritty particles the shell produces, and you get a combination that coats the drain line and collects grease.
Eggshells belong in the trash or compost. They're not going to destroy a disposal in one go, but they're not doing it any favors either. Skip them as a matter of habit.
Chicken bones, pork chop bones, peach pits, and avocado pits shouldn’t go near a garbage disposal. Disposal blades spin fast enough to handle soft food waste. They're not built to grind through hard, dense material. Bones and pits either spin around without being cut or crack into sharp pieces that damage the blades.
A disposal unit that takes repeated impact from hard materials wears down faster and loses grinding efficiency. Garbage disposal replacement becomes necessary sooner than it should. Bones and pits go in the trash, no exceptions.
Small fruit seeds cause the same problem on a smaller scale. Cherry pits, peach stones, and apple seeds are hard enough to chip or dull the blades. The damage is gradual, but it adds up and degrades performance noticeably within a year or two of regular misuse.
Liquid drain cleaners are sold as a quick fix, but they're corrosive. They eat through organic material, which sounds useful until you consider that your pipes, disposal seals, and rubber components are in the same path. Repeated use degrades those components and shortens the life of the unit.
Chemical cleaners also don't fully clear a clog. They eat a hole through the blockage and leave residue behind. The clog rebuilds. A qualified plumber in Mableton, GA, using a mechanical solution, removes the material rather than chemically thinning it.
If you have a slow drain, use a disposal-safe cleaner, try a plunger, or call for a service. Don't pour caustic chemicals into a unit you're trying to protect. The short-term fix costs more in the long run when seals fail, and the unit needs early replacement.
If your disposal hums but doesn't grind, it's likely jammed. Most units have a reset button on the bottom and a hex key slot for manually turning the grinding plate. Turn off the unit, use the hex key to free whatever's stuck, press reset, and try again. If the unit is leaking from the bottom, the internal seals have failed. Signs it's time for garbage disposal replacement include:
A disposal showing two or more of these signs at once is past the point of repair. Replacement is the more cost-effective call. Most units last between eight and fifteen years, depending on use and maintenance, so age is worth factoring into the decision.
If your disposal is struggling, leaking, or dead, don't let it sit. A slow or failed unit backs up your drain line and creates problems further down the pipe. Call Mr. Rooter Plumbing to schedule a service. Our local plumbers diagnose the problem, give you a clear answer on repair versus replacement, and get it taken care of without the runaround.
